Columbarium Rheinkirche
Duisburg Homberg 2021
The Rheinkirche church in Duisburg characterises the town and its identity, yet it was important to the team at ANDERSWOHNENINDERSTADT architects to rethink the use of the sacred building. The result is a columbarium that respects the church architecture and creates independent, transcendent spaces for the burial of urns.
The graves rest in a room-filling, filigree oak structure up to 9 metres high, which seems to dissolve upwards into light cubes that correspond with the church windows.
